The Troitse-Sergieva Lavra ensemble represents one of the most significant monuments of old Russian architecture. It is situated in the very centre of Sergiev Posad. When approaching the town one can see the panorama of the fortress monastery with white-stone towers, shining guided domes and a five-storey belfry. The monastery was founded in the 1340s by Sergiy Radonezhsky, a prominent Church, public and political figure. The current architectural encemble of the monastery is magnificent. It was formed during 15th - 19th century. Its monuments representing various epochs and styles of Russian art bear characteristic sighns of their times.
The Troitsky Cathedral of the Trinity, the first stone building in the monastery, was erected in 1422 - 1423, at the request of Father-Superior Nikon. It was founded by Grand Prince of Moscow Vasily I and prince Yuri of Zvenigorod. In 1425 - 1427, the inside of the church was painted by Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny among others. Only two fragments of these wall-paintings have been preserved.
The Uspensky Cathedral (of the Assumption) was erected in 1559 - 1585) on the orders of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The monumental brick building reflects the shape of the Uspensky Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin and is even a little bigger than that temple is. Its shape suffered multiple changes, the last of which took place in the 1880s. A magnificent bell tower that was built from 1741 - to 1747 and was completed only in 1770 presents one of the best baroque belfries and serves as the composition centre of the monastery.
