Leningrad region

Leningrad region is regarded as one of the most significant territories of Russia. There are more than 3900 historical monuments in the region. Leningrad region is worldwide known for magnificent palace and park complexes that were constructed for over the course of two centuries from St. Petersburg's foundation: Peterhof, Tsarskoe Selo (Pushkin), Orienbaum, Gatchina. All these architectural сomplexes taken together build up an integral historical and artistic chronicle of Russian life and culture. The Peterhof palaces, fountains, cascades and regular parks dating from the eighteenth century are especially evocative of the turbulent, highly creative age of Peter the Great. The palaces and parks of Tsarskoe Selo will take you back to resplendent court ceremonies held during the successful reigns of Empress Elizabeth, Peter’s daughter, and the Catherine the Great who ascended the throne soon after her. It is within the rule of Catherine the Great that the heyday of the residence at Orienbaum, which incorporated the Great Palace of Prince Menshikov, Peter’s outstanding companion-in –armes, is associated. Pavlovsk and Gatchina shed light on personality of Paul, then the Heir Apparent and later the Emperor, and on the drama of his life.

Tsarskoe Selo

Tsarskoe Selo – the very name of this palace-and-park ensemble provokes a number of happy recollections.In addition to its beautiful parks and architecture, it is also associated with the great age of Russian poetry and ceremonial glamour of the past autocratic life. Work on the palace and park in Tsarskoye Selo was started in the early 8th. The place was eventually transformed into the Russian tsarskoye), or "Tsar's village". Between 1752 and 1756, by order of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, the architect Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli united all the separate parts of the palace to create a single ensemble. Tsarskoye Selo, which Pushkin associated in his verses with the idea of homeland, became the holy land of Russian poetry for subsequent generations. Pavlovsk

Pavlovsk, one of the most perfect works of architecture and art of landscape gardening, occupies a special place among royal residences in the environs of St.Petersburg. The Pavlovsk Park is a kind of a philosophical poem about the essence of spiritual life, its secrets, joys and serene melancholy. It’s name reminds us of a complicated and largely tragic personality of Catherine’s the Great’s son, Emperor Paul 1. This is one of the largest landscape parks in Europe, which covers the area of 600 ha. The works on the creating of the ensemble on the banks of the Slavyanka River were held for 50 years by architects Ch. Kameron, G. Guarenghi, A. Voronikhin, C. Rossi. There is a excellent collection of Russian portraits, Pavlovsk landscape oil paintings and drawings. Interior of rooms, which belonged to Maria Fedorovna, deserves special attention because of their unique beauty and harmony designed by G. Guarenghi and A. Oranienbaum

The name of Orienbaum (German for “Orange-tree”), the estate of Alexander Manshikov, Peter Great’s companion-in-armes, stresses a private ather then formal character of the summer residence of the influential coutier. The palace-and-park ensemble is situated on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland opposite Kronshtadt (architects D. Fontana and I. Schedel). In 1743 Oranienbaum became the summer residence of the Emperor Paul III. The Fortress Petershtadt with a petite palace was constructed for him by A. Rinaldi. Later he built the Chinese Palace and the Katalnaya Gorka by the order of Catherine the Great. All these buildings combine exquisite style rococo with traces of classicism. More >>>

Gatchina

The Gatchina Palace origin ally was a hunting lodge of Grigory Orlov, a favorite of Catherine the Great. Later it became the residence of the Russian Emperors Paul 1, Nicolas 1, Alexander 2 and Alexander 111.
