Peterhof The palace and park complex of Peterhof is one of those culminating artistic accomplishments of all the times and peoples which are describable as “wonders of world”. Every detail, every part of the Peterhof ensemble, an outstanding creation by noted European and Russian masters, adds to the its powerful artistic impact. Peterhof, a coastal residence of the Russian Emperors which is famous the world over, has primarily become a symbol of the age of Peter the Great. The picturesque parks play an important part in the Peterhof ensemble. These include the regular Upper Gardens, the Lower Park, the gardens of Venus and Bacchus and the landscaped English and Meadow Parks, amongst others.
You will see the palace and park complex of Peterhof. The Great Cascade is the heart of the Peterhof ensemble and is unique for the plastic expressiveness of its architectural and sculptural forms. Peterhof’s unique network of fountains has brought it worldwide fame. The better-known Great Cascade, consisting of 64 fountains. The great cascade is perceived as a great musical and geographic performance in which everything is pervaded with a pathetic exultation. The singing of water jets and the splashes of stream merge into a single gymn to the glory of Russia. There is a total of 3 cascades and 144 fountains in Peterhof s parks. You will see the Monplaisir complex, Peter the Great’s favourite recreation place, and walk though the Lower Park, which is distinguished by its unusual fountains, that are truly unique. The gem of Peterhof is Peter’s favourite Monplaisir and its garden with fountains including two trick fountains. This palace will remind you about the Dutch tastes of Peter the Great. Then you will explore the Hermitage pavilion (very rare monument of architecture). The centerpiece of the Peterhof ensemble is the Great Palace, which stands on a natural terrace facing the sea (original building 1714-25, designed by Johann-Friedrich Braunstein, Mikhail Zemtsov and Jean-Baptiste Le Blond). With it’s front facing the sea, it makes up, together with the Great Cascade, a single majestic monument to the eighteenth-century. The state interiors of the great Palace were decorated by Rastrelli with an especial luxury. You will go though the Throne room, Portrait room, Chinese Lobbies. The upper gardens stretch in front of the south facade of the Great palace. The largest fountain of the upper Gardens is Neptune depicting sea gad with a fantastic retinue. Finally you will find yourself at the so-called Alexandria area, the seaside residence of Nikolas 1. The Cottage museum palace affords a glimpse of the private life of Emperor.
