The Golden Ring of Russia: Aleksandrov - Sergiev Posad (New)

Day 1. Moscow - Aleksandrov - Sergiev Posad (Zagorsk)

07.00am Meeting with a guide and driver at the hotel lobby (the guide will be holding the sign Russia Travel Group). Departure for Aleksandrov.

09.30-10.00am Arrival in Aleksandrov.

Tour of Aleksandrov. The kremlin was constructed by the same builders of the Kremlin in Moscow by Vasily III. It served as a residence for the tsar and his court, and Alexandrov once was a capital of the burgeoning state over which he ruled. The Pokrovsky (Intercession of the Virgin) cathedral was sanctified in 1513 and later it was blessed anew as the Trinity (Troitsky) Cathedral. Its appearance has changed somewhat since the 16th century; some of the architectural details such as windows, e.g., belong to a later period. Originally, red brick and white stone were used in the outer decoration of the cathedral but brick parts were later painted over. Some of the interior frescos paintings date back to the 14th century as do the white stone carvings in the interior portals.

02.00pm Departure for Sergiev Posad.

02.30-03.00pm Arrival in Sergiev Posad.

Sergiev Posad, the most popular town on the Golden Ring route. The monastery houses the Russian Patriarch's temporary residence. In the monastery you will visit St. Trinity Cathedral where the shrine with St. Sergey's relics is stored, and the Assumption Cathedral that repeats its form after the Assumption Cathedral in the Kremlin. The most beautiful part of the monastery is represented by two similar constructions one of which is the Ecclesiastical Academy and Seminary and the other the Refectory with the Church of St. Sergiy. You will see Holy Uspensky gates, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Assumption Cathedral, Sergius Well Chapel, Towers, Refectory, Church of the St. Micah, Sacristy, Church of the Holy Spirit, Trinity Sergius Monastery, Old Russian Applied Art Museum, Chertogi Palace, Kelarskiye Ponds, Church of St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, Church of the Presentation of the Mother of God etc.

05.00pm Return to Moscow.

Transfer to the hotel in the evening.
