The Poteshny (Amusement) Palace was acquired from a Boyar family in 1652 by Czar Alexis, who turned the building into a residence for his father-in-law. When he died, Alexis turned the palace into the court's first theater. Later, Stalin lived here with his wife and two children. (They had married in 1918 when Stalin was 39 and Nadezhda only 17). When his wife Nadezhda committed suicide in November 1932, the children were moved to other quarters, and Stalin lived separately in another Kremlin apartment.
