The Metro is the fastest and cheapest way to get around Moscow and St. Petersburg. More than eight million people ride the Moscow Metro daily. Trains run every 90 seconds during rush hour. Central stations are beautifully decorated with chandeliers and mosaics. Metro stations are easy to spot – entrances on the street are marked with a large M. Even the long escalator rides are great entertainment. Metro maps are posted inside each station. To ride the Metro, first purchase a magnetic–strip card at the underground Rassa booth. (In St. Petersburg, some stations may still use tokens or zheton). To save money, you can also purchase Metro cards at a discount for various numbers of trips. A monthly pass (10 or 20 rides), or half – monthly, as well as a monthly Metro / bus pass.
Insert the card into the turnstile and wait for the green light before taking your ticket and passing through (some turnstiles are still archaic and can shut violently). All station and transfer areas are clearly marked, but in Russian. If you do not read Cyrillic, have someone write down the name of your destination. People are always helpful and are glad to point you in the right direction. Even though transferring to another station underground can be especially confusing, never forget to relish the adventure and marvel at the beauty of the stations.
Taxis
In Russia, taxi fees are usually negotiated with the driver ahead of time. Do not use gypsy cabs or accept rides in cabs that already have a rider. We shall be glad to provide you with airport transfers by our company car. If you would like to order a transfer please fill out our transfer order form.
